This months Spotlight is on our Associate, Matt Wood
Why did you choose a career in Structural Engineering?
I was interested in buildings and structures at an early age, so sometimes you just know.
What has been the most memorable moment for you?
Standing on top of a 55-storey building I spent several years designing, and being able to see my house…
What has been the most challenging part?
Sitting the IStructE exam was certainly challenging.
What do you like most about your job?
Seeing a complicated and impressive design you’ve poured hours and hours into become a reality. That or solving problems!
What’s the best career lesson you’ve learned so far?
Be clear and concise, keep up good habits, and keep the whole project team informed.
What’s your favourite structure in the world?
There are too many candidates to brand just one as my favourite. Though Riverlight Quays in Nine Elms is certainly inspiring, as are 432 Park Avenue and the Forth Rail Bridge.
And lastly, what is one piece of advice you would give to someone starting out in Structural Engineering?
Understanding structural behaviour is more important than being able to do calculations; be able to imagine how a structure will behave.
